Francisco Correia dos Santos

He received his PhD in Computer Science from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, as a Marie Curie PhD Fellow at the Institut de Recherches Interdisciplinaires et Intelligence Artificielle (IRIDIA). After his PhD, he became a FNRS senior researcher (Machine Learning Group, ULB, Belgium), joining IST in 2012. In Lisbon, he co-headed the Group of Artificial Intelligence for People and Society (GAIPS) at INESC-ID, and the interdisciplinary group ATP.
His research lies at the intersection of computer science, evolutionary biology, economics, and physics. His current work focuses on problems related to the evolution of cooperation and social norms, environmental governance, network science, or the impact of technology on human behavior. The topics of his publications also include city planning, history, robotics, the ecology of cancer, and cosmology.
Francisco was awarded the Young Scientist Award for Socio-Econophysics of the German Physical Society, the CGD / University of Lisbon prize in Computer Science, the IST's Outstanding Teaching Award, and a Blue Sky award of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, among other prizes.
