Emanuel

I am an Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) - University of Lisbon, Researcher at INESC-ID and Invited Researcher at iBB, developing machine learning approaches to integrate large-scale biological datasets to understand protein and metabolic regulation and their contexts.

As a Postdoctoral Fellow at Wellcome Sanger Institute, Cambridge – UK, I took part and lead international and multidisciplinary projects, such as Cancer DepMap, bridging machine learning with proteogenomic and functional genomic assays (CRISPR-based screens) to characterise genetic vulnerabilities of cancer cells and put forward novel clinically actionable biomarkers for precision medicine. I was also a Senior Data Scientist at precision medicine start-up Ophiomics, Lisbon – Portugal, leading research and development of novel diagnostic and prognostic products for liver cancer patients using machine learning approaches. I was also awarded a EMBO short-term fellowship to support a 3-month visit to ETH-Zürich to develop multiomics machine learning integrative approaches.

I obtained my PhD in Systems Biology from the University of Cambridge (2017) with work carried at European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI). I graduated in Informatics Engineering (2010) from the University of Minho, where I also completed a Master’s in Bioinformatics (2012), awarded with distinction, with thesis carried-out at the EMBL-EBI.
