Active mobility researcher, GIS and R enthusiast

Rosa Félix is a researcher specialized in urban mobility, with a focus on active and sustainable transportation. She completed her PhD in Transport Systems in 2019 with MIT Portugal at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), and was recognized with the Best PhD Award from the University of Lisbon’s RedeMov. She holds a Master's degree (2012) in Territory and Urban Planning Engineering. Her academic path includes a year as a Visiting Scholar at Portland State University (2017-18), and a 4-month Visiting Researcher at the University of Sydney (2025-26). She is currently a Junior Researcher at IST-ID (CERIS) since 2023, and Invited Assistant Professor since 2024 at IST, and member of the U-Shift research lab, in the Transportation Research Group of the same Research Center.
After earlier roles as a cartographer for the Portuguese Geographic Institute and in IT support, she began as an intern at the Lisbon Mobility Department, contributed in 2013 to the Bicycle Mobility Plan of Loulé and to extending the EuroVelo Network to Portugal, and since 2017 has taken part in several research and consultancy projects for local and regional mobility agencies.
Rosa is skilled in GIS, modern GIS, transport modeling, and R software, while exploring web mapping. Rosa has been working since 2012 in cycling mobility, transport engineering and transport planning, behavior change, social and economic impacts of transportation and shared mobility, and refined methods for transportation data collection and reproducibility. She has given 40+ interviews for newspapers, magazines and podcasts, at both national and international level, where she has had the opportunity to present the findings from her research to a broader audience.
Rosa is a member and project coordinator of a community bicycle workshop, Cicloficina dos Anjos and FEMINA since 2011, and volunteered at Bike Farm in 2017/18. She has also worked as project manager at Bike Pop and Oficina 35 in Lisbon.
