We are a small passionate team.
We are a team of four third-year students from LEEC (Electrical and Computer Engineering) and one student from LEE (Electronic Engineering) at Instituto Superior Técnico. This device is being developed as part of our PIC – Integrative Project Course.
Our project, Safe Noise – Smart Noise Monitoring System, aims to research and develop a device that addresses the following problem:
"Workers exposed to environments with intense but non-permanent noise often neglect the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) due to discomfort or cultural factors. Additionally, workplace safety personnel lack adequate tools to measure and analyze the severity of this issue, making it difficult to implement effective hearing protection measures."
To tackle this issue, we have reached out to companies involved in high-noise industrial settings, including factories, construction firms, and manufacturers of currently used protective equipment. We have also engaged with safety and health technicians to understand workplace challenges and compliance requirements.
Our technological solution consists of a portable or fixed noise monitoring device that generates daily noise reports, measures exposure levels in real time, and alerts workers when PPE is required. Additionally, it will include a PPE compliance verification system to ensure protective equipment is being used correctly.
