Since the work of Hadamard in 1893, there has been considerable interest in inequalities among principal minors of matrices in a given class. We survey classical inequalities in such classes as the positive definite matrices, M-matrices and totally positive matrices. Then, we discuss modern work in the direction of characterizing ALL inequalities among PM's in such classes.
