DS18B20 Temperature Sensor & Clinical Thermometer Comparison

We tested the DS18B20 temperature sensor to check if it would work well in the context of this project. In terms of placement, it fits perfectly in the vest and is easy to integrate. However, we weren’t sure if it would give reliable body temperature readings, so we tested it against a clinical thermometer:

  1. To test it, we first measured the room temperature, which was 27°C (the sensor showed 27.20°C, which was very close)
  2. Then we placed it under the armpit and tracked how the temperature increased over time (see table to the right)
  3. After 7 to 10 minutes, the value reached was very close to what we got from the clinical thermometer (36.8°C)

While not ideal for fast readings, it’s accurate enough for the requirements of our prototype, besides allowing for a simpler and cheaper design.
