Prof. Almeida Alves, a chemical engineer, full professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, taught here since the 1940's several courses in Chemical Engineering and in Mathematics. He was also for many years the President (then "Director") of Instituto Superior Técnico and later of the Department, while also a director in the largest Portuguese chemical company, CUF (later Quimigal).
