Projects as Senior Researcher

  1. [2018-2021] – Member of the research team in the project hSNS (Portuguese public hospital performance assessment using a multi-criteria decision analysis framework). Goal will be to develop and employ a multiple criteria decision making-based model to be possible to classify hospitals into predefined and ordered categories (resources, production, mortality, relapses vs perceived quality, patient’s satisfaction, etc.). FCT contract PTDC/EGE-OGE/30546/2017 (competitive funding of 234.599€ for the IST-ID).
  2. [2018-2021] – Member of the research team in the project REP (Representativeness of social partners and the impact in economic governance). Goal will be the construction of an information system, supported by a digital library of sources of national labour legislation and workers unions activity on Portugal. FCT contract PTDC/SOC-SOC/29207/2017 (competitive funding of 27.442€ for the INESC-ID).
  3. [2018-2020] – Scientific coordinator of the INESC-ID team in the project DSI-4 (Europeana Digital Service Infrastructure). Goal is to continue the work started in the project DSI-3. Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program competitive funding of 88.439€ for the INESC-ID.
  4. [2018-2020] – Project manager of the project DRE (“Diário da República Eletrónico”). Goal is to develop a new customized search and retrieval solution for the public service of the “Diário da República”, at http://dre.pt. INCM funding of 300.000€ for the INESC-ID.
  5. [2018-2019] – Scientific coordinator of the INESC-ID team in the project eArchiving. The goal is to move the results of the E-ARK project to the next stage, making them the core of the European eArchiving Building Block. Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) competitive funding of 1.529.999€, of which 109.200€ for the INESC-ID.
  6. [2017-2018] – Scientific coordinator of the INESC-ID team in the project DSI-3 ((Europeana Digital Service Infrastructure). Goal was the design and implementation of solutions for Europeana to harvest and full-text indexing of digitized newspapers from data providers. European competitive funding of 93.200€ for the INESC-ID, granted by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program.
  7. [2016-2019] – Member of the INESC-ID team in the project PRECISE – Precision Medicine. Goal is to develop an infrastructure of services to support precision medicine, including the collection and management of data. National competitive funding of 2.499.827€ granted by the FCT, of which 500.864€ for the INESC-ID (contract SAICTPAC/0021/2015).
  8. [2016-2017] – Scientific coordinator of the INESC-ID team in the project DSI-2 (Europeana Digital Service Infrastructure). Goal was the development of solutions to verify and enrich with linked data the metadata aggregated from Europeana data providers. European competitive funding of 107.000€ for the INESC-ID, granted by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program.
  9. [2015-2018] – Member of the INESC-ID team in the project EXELERATE. The goal is to develop the ELIXIR Portugal node on bioengineering (infrastructure of services and data management). European competitive funding of 5.331.849€, of which 167.443€ for the INESC-ID, granted by the H2020 program.
  10. [2016-2017] – Scientific coordinator of the project Corporate Risk Management Framework. Goal was to define and support the application of a corporate risk management framework for the INCM (“Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moeda”). Funding of 40.000€ for the INESC-ID.
  11. [2014-2016] – Scientific coordinator of the IST team in the project e-ARK - European Archival Records and Knowledge Preservation. Goal was to develop reference technology for digital preservation in administrative archives. The success of this project triggered the European eArchiving Building Block (project eArchiving). EContentPlus program competitive total co-funding of 2.999.699€ for 16 partners, of which 252.139€ for the IST.
  12. [2013-2015] – Scientific coordinator of the INESC-ID team at Project BenchmarkDP - Systematic Assessment and improvement for information longevity, funded Vienna Science and Technology Fund (subcontract to INESC-ID through the Technical University of Vienna). The goal was to develop maturity models for "information longevity" scenarios (concept in the scope of digital preservation). Total competitive funding of 500.000€ for 3 partners, of which 43.200€ for the IST.
  13. [2013-2014] – Scientific coordinator of the INESC-ID team in the project 4C (Collaboration to Clarify the Costs of Curation). The goal was to develop cost models for digital preservation scenarios. FP7 Program total competitive co-funding of 1.484.319€ for 13 partners, of which 77.575€ for the INESC-ID.
  14. [2012-2014] – Scientific coordinator of the INESC-ID team in the project TIMBUS - Digital Preservation for Timeless Business processes and Services. The objective was the development of techniques and technology for the preservation of technology and information of business processes in various contexts. Total FP7 competitive funding of 7.778.616€, for 12 partners, of which 814.173€ for INESC-ID.
  15. [2011-2013] – Scientific coordinator of the IST team in the project Linked Heritage funded by the EContentPlus competitive program. The goal is to collect and consolidate records of descriptions of digital resources from museums to feed the Europeana service. Total funding of 3.086.407€ For 38 partners, of which 52.466€ for the IST.
  16. [2011-2013] – General Coordinator of the project EuDML - European Digital Mathematics Library, funded by the EContentPlus competitive program. The goal was to develop the infrastructure of a digital library for the area of mathematics. Total funding of 1.600.000€, for 14 partners, of which 248.532€ for the IST.
  17. [2011-2012] – Scientific coordinator of the IST team in the project EuropeanaLibraries, funded by the EContentPlus competitive programme. The objective was the collection and standardization of bibliographic Records of university libraries for Europeana. Project Hired by the Superior Technical Institute. Total funding of 3.094.765€ for 26 partners, of which 182.349€ for the IST.
  18. [2009-2011] – Scientific coordinator of the IST team in the project EuropeanaConnet, funded by the EContentPlus competittive programme (contract 528001). The goal was the development of the interoperation infrastructure for the portal of the European initiative (http://www.europeana.eu), regarding the circulation of metadata, translations of metadata schemes, and integration of information services Geographical. Total funding of 4.500.000€ for 30 partners, of which 96.384€ for the IST.
  19. [2007-2011] – Scientific coordinator of the INESC-ID team in the project SHAMAN- Sustainable Heritage Access through multivalent archiving (an "Integrated Project"). The goal was to develop innovative technological platforms for digital preservation scenarios. INESC-ID was responsible for coordinating the digital preservation scenario in "e-science" (preservation of scientific data, including the definition and preservation of metadata and associated document information). Total funding of 8.398.300€ for 18 partners, of which 309.376€ for INESC-ID.
  20. [2007-2009] – Scientific coordinator of the IST team in the project TELplus – The European Library Plus, co-funded by the EContentPlus program (contract 510003). The goal was to develop a new service infrastructure for the TEL – the European Library portal, including a new knowledge base for all bibliographic information. Project Hired by the Superior Technical Institute. Total funding of 3.250.000€ for 26 partners, of which 388.402€ for the IST.
  21. [2007-2010] – General Coordinator of the project GRITO - A GRID for preservation (Contract GRID/GRI/81872/2006), funded by FCT. Total funding of 140.000€, of which 47.910€ for the INESC-ID (the consortium also comprised the University of Aveiro, ADETI-ISCTE, and the company Intraneia).

  1. [2006-2008] – General Coordinator of the project DIGMAP – Discovering our Past World with Digitised historical Maps, funded by the EContentPlus program (contract 38942). The objective was the design and develop a distributed information system at European level to support manual and automated registration services (by processing the contents of images) of scanned historical maps and discovery services Same.   3. [2004-2005] – Coordinator of the team of the National Library of Portugal in MINERVA-Plus, supported by the European program IST- Information Society and Technology (Contract 507083). This Project It aimed at the development of recommendations and guidelines for national digitisation strategies, in a network of advice to the Ministries of culture.
  4. [2004-2005] – Coordinator of the team of the National Library of Portugal in RiCoBA-books with rich content for all. Project funded by FTC (contract POSC/EIA/61042/2004) and coordinated by the LASIGE Large-scale Computer Systems Laboratory at the University of Lisbon. Project promoted in the continuation of the Project Previous IPSOM (see below), aiming to improve the alignment between text, image and sound in spoken books.
  5. [2001-2004] – Coordinator of the team of the National Library of Portugal in TEL- The European Library, supported by the European program IST- Information Society and Technology (Contract 25347), which aims to demonstrate new services developed in a common way between European national libraries aiming at bibliographic research access to digital or digitized resources.
  6. [2001-2004] – Coordinator of the team of the National Library of Portugal in LEAF- Linking and exploring Authority files, supported by the European programme IST- Information Society and Technology, which aims to promote interoperation at the international level of authority information (metadata about authors) between libraries and archives.
  7. [2001-2004] – Coordinator of the team of the National Library of Portugal in Refine – recognition of non-current typographic fonts. Project Funded by FTC (POSI/SRI/41201/2001) and coordinated by IDMEC – Institute of Mechanical Engineering of IST. The Project It addressed problems of improving OCR results and alternative solutions for old printed text recognition. The Project It was suggested following the identification of concrete problems encountered in the BN, during the development of the initiative of the National Digital Library.
  8. [2000-2005] – Coordinator of the initiative BND - National Digital Library, at the National Library of Portugal.
  9. [2000-2004] – Coordinator of the team of the National Library of Portugal in IPSOM (Contract POSI/PLP/34252/99), a partnership of the INESC and University of Lisbon with the support of the National Library of Portugal and Ministry of Science and Technology. This purpose of this project was the automation of the voice-to-text transcription and sound indexing in "spoken books".
  10. [1999-2005] – Coordinator of the team of the National Library of Portugal in the project PORBASE 5, in partnership with the company MIND S. A. The goal was the design and development of a management system for interoperable medium-sized libraries on the Internet with the central services of the National Library of Portugal and especially the PORBASE- National Bibliography Database. Note: The result of this project was a commercial product that after 3 years equipped more than one thousand libraries throughout the country, having become a national reference product for small and medium-sized libraries.
  11. [1998-2001] – Coordinator of the team of the National Library of Portugal in MALVINE – "Manuscripts and letters via Integrated networks in Europe, supported by the EC Telematics program (contract LB-5674/B), which was focused on the problem of access in the World Wide Web and by the protocol Z39.50 of bibliographic information of European personal manuscripts of contemporary writers.
  12. [1998-2000] – Coordinator of the team of the National Library of Portugal in NEDLIB – "Networked European Deposit Library "Of the European Telematics program (contract LB-5648), which addressed the problem of depositing and preserving digital publications in national libraries.

Projects as Junior Researcher

  1. [1998] – Coordinator of the team of the INESC in the consulting project to the rectory of the ICU-Technical University of Lisbon, aiming to present recommendations and an investment strategy and reorganization of the libraries of the university in the components of technology, services and human resources.
  2. [1997-1998] – Technical coordinator of the INESC team in the national project SIO – "Organizational Information systems" (Contract PRAXIS/2/2.1/1667/95), aiming to develop services, using the in that moment emerging Internet technology, to support the activity of distributed organizations.
  3. [1996-1997] – Member of the INESC team in the project SCREEN – "Service Creation Engineering Environment", co-funded by the competitive European program ATS (AC227 contract). The goal was the raising of requirements and model the object-oriented components for the creation of services for the telecommunications industry.
  4. [1995-1996] – Member of the INESC team in the project CEEE (Continuing Electrical Engineers Education), co-founded by the competitive European program EUROFORM. Developed a multimedia product for the learning of the fundamentals of object-oriented modelling and programming (the result was a computer-based training product).
  5. [1992-1995] – Technical manager of the INESC team at Project International HAMLET (High Performance Computing for Industrial applications), co-funded by the competitive European ESPRIT Program (contract 6290). Coordinated the development of a simulation environment for parallel systems based on the architecture of the Transputer microprocessor.
  6. [1989-1992] – INESC team member at international project SPAN (Parallel Computer System for Integrated and Symbolic Processing), co-funded by the competitive European ESPRIT Program (contract 1588), where architectures and object-oriented programming languages have been developed. This project provided the context for the master dissertation (pre-Bologna).
