Hybrid silica nanoparticles

Development of hybrid silica nanoparticles (diameter between 20 and 300 nm) with fluorescent molecules incorporated in the silica network. Compact nanoparticles are obtained through the Stöber method, using organic fluorescent molecules with alkoxysilane groups as secondary silica source, to obtain hybrid nanostructures. Additionally, the external surface can be easily modified for targeting and increased biocompatibility. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) are obtained using a modified sol-gel process using a template and achieving porous with diameter around 2-4 nm. The MSNs external surface can be selectively functionalized to immobilize polymers or (bio)molecules for possible targeting or sensing, and the pore is available for solvent diffusion, allowing the incorporation of different molecules.

Synthesis of perylenediimides (PDIs)

Our objective is the development of new functionalize perylenediimides (PDIs) for crystaline organic semiconductors and visible-NIR imaging. The introduction of substituent's in the imide region will affect the solubility or allow their immobilization, and substituent's in the bay region (perylene core) will affect the electronic and optical properties. The new functional groups are chosen depending on the selected application.
