Os interesses científicos actuais de Mário Berberan e Santos incidem em especial sobre a luminescência de fulerenos e de sistemas nanoestruturados em geral, e sobre a dinâmica de processos envolvendo estados electrónicos excitados, incluindo a transferência de energia electrónica (radiativa e não radiativa) e a fluorescência retardada por activação térmica (TADF), e respectivas aplicações.
